Illinois Licensure (225 ILSC 441 enacted in 2001). Illinois law creates the Illinois Home Inspector License Act and establishes a Home Inspector Advisory Board within the Office of Banks and Real Estate (OBRE), which is charged with regulating home inspectors. To obtain a license, an applicant must: 1) be at least 21 years of age, 2) obtain a high school diploma or GED, 3) as a prerequisite for sitting for the examination, succ essfully complete 60 hours of pre-license education from an education provider approved and licensed by OBRE, and 4) take and successfully pass the Home Inspector Examination for Illinois, which consists of the National Home Inspector Examination and a section concerning Illinois statutes and regulations. Licensed home Inspectors are required to perform Inspections that meet the minimum standards of practice established by rule as adopted by the OBRE. The law also exempts certain professionals from licensure as a home inspector while acting under the scope of their licenses. The law became effective January 1, 2003.
